“Wakey, wakey, Friday!” Stark said.

The suit came to life, breaking down and reassembling on Stark’s person.

One of his attackers appeared at the bedroom door just as Stark got his hand in one of the gauntlet gloves. He turned and fired before the attacker could get off a shot. The man fell back into a second attacker.

This guy was luckier. He pushed the fallen man down and fired back at Stark.

By then, Stark was fully Iron Man.

The bullets bounced harmlessly off the armor.

“My turn!” Iron Man said before blasting the second attacker to kingdom come.

Iron Man returned to the main room.

“Switching to infrared vision,” Friday reported.

Looking at the room in infrared, Iron Man saw the two remaining attackers dragging Vanko to the window and hitching him up to one of their rappel lines. One of the men spotted him first and fired.

This time, the bullets made a palpable dent. Iron Man returned fire, knocking the man to the floor.

Unfortunately, as he went down, Vanko went up and out the window.

With a scream.

Iron Man switched on his boot thrusters and flew straight at the remaining attacker. The man got off a shot, but it went wide.

Iron Man flew past him, failing to connect on the way out the window. Didn’t matter though; from here, the man was no longer a threat.

Flying high, Iron Man went up so he could see the roof. There he saw that guy with the literal hand cannon from Gotham.

Batman had identified him as KGBeast. He stripped Vanko of his rappel line and attached him to some apparatus the Beast had on him.

“I guess you wouldn’t be interested in simply letting the good thieving engineer go, would you?” Iron Man asked through his external speaker.

KGBeast turned his hand cannon on Iron Man.

“Guessing that’s a no?”

Iron Man failed the dodge, taking a rocket to the chest. It pushed him back a few feet. “Not this again!” he complained.

When he turned back to KGBeast and Vanko, he saw the Beast leaping from the roof. To Iron Man’s surprise, wings unfolded from the pack on KGBeast’s back. He glided effortlessly toward the streets below.

At least that made him an easier target to find.

Using Friday and his reasoning, Iron Man judged KGBeast’s trajectory would lead him to the Mandalay Bay event center’s dock area. As he had rockets instead of the wind, he beat KGBeast to the area, landing dramatically.

A quick scan located a cargo van that looked out of place. There were a few empty trucks too, but no other civilians. He walked toward the van.

“Warning! Rocket attack!” Friday said.

Iron Man turned too late, taking another rocket hit. This one knocked him off his feet. He looked up and saw KGBeast gliding in for a landing.

The van’s side door opened, and two more masked attackers raced to the Beast’s position.

Without getting off the ground, Iron Man fired at the running men. He took one of them down before they reached the Beast. The other one helped release Vanko.

KGBeast removed the glider but held it in front of him and his man.

Soon the Beast and his men were on the move back to the van, using the glider as cover.

Iron Man was firing blind. He decided not to hit the men at all; he’d destroy the glider. While getting to his feet, he fired on the glider, blowing off a section.

As the men neared the van, he fired again, taking out the glider’s other side — and revealing one of the attackers.

Standing tall, Iron Man fired at the attacker, taking him down.

KGBeast dropped the glider’s remains and fired a third rocket. Iron Man spun to the side, firing at the rocket as it went past him. He shot it down, saving the casino further property damage.

Unfortunately, that was all the time the Beast needed to get Vanko and himself in the van.

Iron Man spun back around just as the van’s side door slammed shut and the driver pulled away. From behind a truck, two more ex-KGB thugs fired on Iron Man with Vanko’s gauntlets. Both missed the mark.

Iron Man didn’t.

The van was gone.

To be continued…
