“I am not letting you go there alone!” Dinah Lance, a.k.a. the vigilante Black Canary, demanded.

Sonya Blade cupped her face in her palm. Defeated, she let her body relax, propping herself up against her police-issued unmarked car.

“You are so stubborn,” Sonya said.

“And you are so stupid for trying to go after Kano alone,” Dinah replied. “He killed your partner. I get it. But I’m not losing my friend —”

Sonya threw up her hands. “You won, okay? You have the keys! I’m not going anywhere!”

Dinah gave Sonya a look the veteran Seattle detective knew all too well. “What are you planning, Lance?”

Bouncing the keys in her palm, Dinah replied, “I said I’m not letting you go there alone.”

An exchange of glances, and then both women smiled.

“Now move,” Dinah said. “I’m driving.”

Dinah tossed the keys up. Sonya snatched them out of the air.

“When’s the last time you drove anything other than a motorcycle?” Sonya asked.

“You expecting to get in a car chase on the way there?”

Sonya opened the driver’s side door. “I’m the legally sanctioned detective here,” Sonya said. “I’m driving the legally sanctioned car.”

“On the way to the not legally sanctioned B&E at the docks.”

“Touché,” Sonya replied.

Half an hour later, Sonya and Dinah pulled up at the Port of Seattle. Sonya killed the engine.

“So, is there a plan?” Dinah asked.

Sonya thought for a moment. She drew her handgun from her shoulder holster. “Sure,” she eventually said. “You run in there, do your Black Canary vigilante mutant scream thing. I’ll come in after you, find Kano, put a bullet in him.”

“Sounds great up until that bullet part.”

“I’m sure he’ll do something lethal. Self-defense.”

“Unless it’s pre-meditated, miss legally sanctioned detective.”

Sonya glared at Dinah. “Why do I let you, a lawbreaking vigilante, keep me in line?”

“Because my work as the Canary makes your work as a cop so much easier.”

“You don’t have to fill out the paperwork.”

Dinah reached for Sonya’s gun. “Because I haven’t killed anybody.”

Sonya snatched the gun back and slid it back into its holster. “These guys will have shotguns or worse. I’m taking the gun.”

Off Dinah’s glance, she added, “I’ll shoot to wound.”

Dinah tilted her head in disbelief but knew it was the best she’d get from her friend. She reached into a pocket of her leather jacket and pulled out her domino mask.

Dinah peeled the tape off the back revealing the adhesive that kept the mask to remain in place.

“Do I have to wait for you to get into those fishnet stockings too?” Sonya asked.

Dinah placed her mask onto her face. An impatient Sonya watched Dinah then unbuttoned her jeans and started sliding them off. Underneath she wore her trademark black, fishnet stockings.

“Always come prepared,” she said. Dinah, now set in her vigilante Black Canary costume, looked Sonya up and down. “Are crop tops revealing an ample amount of cleavage, though cute and sexy, standard detective issue now?”

“I’m off duty!” Sonya said while getting out of the car.

Dinah slipped her jeans over her boots.

Sonya stuck her head back into the car. Glaring at Dinah, she said, “Get a move on, or I’ll shoot to wound you!”

Here’s the full-length promo video for my action urban fantasy book, Two Sisters. It’s part of my “Shadowdance” series. Don’t worry; it’s under forty seconds but has elements of the three influences on the saga as a whole. Writing is easy. Marketing is hard.
