Batgirl admitted a grudging respect for O-Ren Ishii’s swordsmanship.
The swordswoman instantly put the vigilante on the defensive, each slash of her ninja-to forcing Batgirl to keep her guard up. She blocked blows with her gauntlets, ducked under others.
Then O-Ren feinted, drawing an opening in Batgirl’s defenses. She turned her back to the vigilante and thrust her blade behind her on her left side.
It pierced the vigilante’s Kevlar weaving on the right side of Batgirl’s stomach.
For a moment, both combatants stood motionless, the weight of the moment falling upon them. O-Ren broke the silence.
“A twist and I spill your intestines to the floor,” she said. “You will die in minutes without immediate aid. Or I can pull the sword straight out and spare you a slow death.”
“Third option,” Batgirl said through clenched teeth.
She stepped forward, the sword going further into her stomach. The move brought her front to O-Ren’s back — close enough to grab the wrist of the hand with which O-Ren held her sword.
Batgirl’s other hand performed a strike against O-Ren’s sword arm. Bone cracked. O-Ren released her sword and stepped away from Batgirl.
The skewered vigilante stumbled away from the assassin, whose sword protruded from her stomach.
Holding her fractured arm, O-Ren turned to face Batgirl. “Clever girl,” she said, not once wincing from the pain in her arm. “But are you clever enough to escape before the bomb goes off?”
Batgirl glared at O-Ren. “What did you do?”
With a smile, O-Ren moved around the corner of a railcar and out of sight. Batgirl took a step to follow, but the pain from the sword still in her torso stopped her.
The vigilante ground her teeth as she took hold of the ninja-to’s hilt, preparing to draw it out.

Black Canary fell backward, but too late.
Scorpion’s flames burst from the ground at her feet, catching part of her in the blast. Her boots took the worst of the fire, partially melting from the heat. Her straight blonde hair frizzed.
Canary hit the ground hard. She immediately rolled, ensuring the flames didn’t light her up.
As she came to a stop, she heard a fierce yell from Sonya.
Canary looked up from her position on the ground and saw her ally leaping over the nearby machinery and landing a flying punch to the side of Scorpion’s head.
The masked assassin spun again, landing hard against a nearby parked rail car.
Sonya positioned herself between Scorpion and Black Canary. “Enough with the sorcery!” she said. “Let’s do this!” Sonya assumed a fighting stance.
Scorpion shook his head as if that would cast away the damage he’d taken. He then took several cautious steps away from the car and into the open area.
Sonya pivoted to stay ready for him.
Then Black Canary heard Batgirl over the headset the Gotham vigilante had loaned her.
“Now’s not the time, Sonya!” Canary said.
“I can’t think of a better —” Sonya began.
“Batgirl says there’s a bomb!”
Sonya blinked.
“Get over here!” Scorpion yelled, bringing Sonya back to the fight.
The yellow-garbed assassin opened his plan facing Sonya. The skin of his palm parted. His spear launched from his palm, its chain spewing from Scorpion’s arm.
Sonya sidestepped the spear. It thrust itself into a piece of machinery behind her. Scorpion yanked on the chain to pull the spear back.
It refused to pull free.
Seizing the advantage, Sonya charged Scorpion. She spun for a kick to his stomach. Still hampered by his right chain arm, Scorpion side stepped the blow.
It put him right in line for Sonya’s next trick.
While spinning around, Sonya drew a garrote from her wristwatch. She wrapped it around Scorpion’s neck and twisted.
Her momentum drove the garotte into and through the assassin’s neck, slicing his head clean off.
Scorpion’s body fell to the ground. His head fell next to him.
Black Canary approached Sonya. “Was that really necessary?” she asked.
The Seattle detective let the garrote recoil back into her watch. She held up her arm to show off the watch, a Hello Kitty! Model.
“I had it made just for Scorpion,” Sonya said. “So yeah, it was necessary.”
Sonya drop kicked Scorpion’s head down the row of machinery and railcars. Turning back to Black Canary, she asked, “Now, what was this about a bomb?”
A black and yellow form dropped down behind Black Canary.
“Jesus!” Sonya yelled as she stumbled away from the form. It took her a moment to realize it was Batgirl. “Don’t ever do that!”
“Sorry,” Batgirl said. “Gotham thing.”
Seeing Quick Clot patches on Batgirl’s shoulder and stomach, Sonya asked, “What happened to you?”
“Your ninja girl,” Batgirl said. “But we have to move. Now!”
“Bomb, right,” Canary said. “Let’s go!”
Canary started to run for the rear exit, but Batgirl stopped her.
“No time that way,” the caped crusader said. “Grab on to me and hold tight!”
Canary and Sonya both realized that Batgirl still had her grappling gun in hand. Its line ran up and out through the skylight.
“You sure this’ll carry us all?” Sonya asked as she wrapped her arms around Batgirl’s neck.
“Just hope we all had light lunches!” Black Canary said as she too grabbed hold of Batgirl.
The Gotham vigilante attached the grappling gun to her utility belt. A flick of a button and the three women began their ascent to the roof.
O-Ren and her ninja’s railcar exploded. Other cars followed in short order. Flames and debris began to consume the building.
Will the ladies get out of the building before it all goes up? And what happens after if they do? Only one way to find out! See you in the next chapter!
