“You’re a difficult man to find when you want to be, Superman.”

Kara Zor-El and Superman stared at the face and upper body of General Nick Fury projected as a hologram in front of them at the Fortress’s screening area. Fury had sent the signal out on Superman’s frequency.

Kryptonian technology allowed the signal in but jammed any chance of Fury tracking the responding signal to its source.

Before accepting the call, Superman had explained to Kara that Fury was a leader among the people of Earth, charged with protecting the planet.

Admittedly, Fury’s tactics were not always the most agreeable, but Superman felt his intentions were sound.

“Even superheroes need downtime and privacy, general,” the Man of Steel replied to Fury. “What can I do for you?”

“First off, I want to thank you for helping my people in space.” Fury looked at Kara. “I take it you two came to an understanding?”

Superman beamed with pride as he too looked to Kara. “General Fury, I’d like you to meet Kara Zor-El. She’s my cousin from the planet Krypton.”

“Hopefully she wants to follow in her cousin’s bootsteps and not destroy my planet?”

“We were getting to that.”

“Well you’ll have to get to it faster,” Fury said. “She may switch sides, but we’re seeing a couple hundred demon-looking robots coming out of a cosmic tube. I’m guessing they’re not familial relations.”

Kara’s expression darkened. “Parademons.”

Fury looked confused. “Para whats?”

“Parademons,” Kara said. “Mindless robot soldiers who serve Darkseid.”

Fury blinked. “Explanations. Fast.”

“Darkseid conquers worlds,” Kara said. “He sent me here as his herald to prepare this one for conquest. When I did not respond with an update, he sent the Parademons to find me.”

Fury considered this. “We’ll circle back on this Darkseid character later. Tell me about these Parademons. Will they attack?”

“If they don’t see me performing my mission, yes.”

“Fine,” Fury said. “I have some random space debris you can —”

Kara waved him off. “When they see me destroy something, they’ll come to aid me. They tend to have a voracious appetite for destruction that will move far beyond my initial target.

“If they meet little to no resistance, Darkseid may deem the planet easy prey and immediately send more Parademons to finish the conquest.”

“How many more?” Superman asked, tension in his tone.

Kara looked pleadingly to her cousin. “Millions.”

The trio fell silent.

Fury asked, “I take it these things are at least as strong as the two of you?”

“Parademons aren’t individually strong,” Kara said. “Darkseid’s aim with them is to overrun an opponent with massive numbers.”

“And I suspect when he starts seeing their numbers dwindle he’ll just send more down that tube,” Fury said.

“Or worse,” Superman wondered.

“I used a device called a Mother Box to travel here,” Kara explained. “It opens a dimensional portal that allows crossing space and time in an instant.”

“The Parademons will have one too,” Superman surmised.

“If we destroy their box, we close the portal here,” Kara explained.

“Then it’s just a matter of cleanup,” Superman said.

“Cleanup is what SHIELD does best,” Fury said. “I have Captain Marvel and a SHIELD space battle force on standby. You two get up there, get that tube closed and destroy those Parademons.”

Kara looked solemn. She soon felt Superman’s concerned eyes on her. Looking at him, she said, “If I do this…”

Superman put his hands on his cousin’s shoulders. “I’m here for you now, Kara. I won’t let Darkseid hurt you.”

“It’s not me I’m worried about, Kal-El,” she replied. “The people of Kandor, our people. The few who remain, anyway. They’re still with Darkseid on Apokolips.”

A grim expression overtook Superman’s face.

Fury cut in. “Even when we beat this wave, it sounds like this Darkseid character will keep coming. Unless we take the fight to him and stop him.”

The Kryptonians looked to Fury.

“I have some people I can spare for a task like that.”

“Without leaving the Earth defenseless?” Superman asked.

Fury laughed. “You think you two are the Earth’s only avengers?”
