Captain Marvel studied Kara Zor-El.

Mere hours ago, the super-powered teen was hurling shuttle parts at her and killing her SHIELD allies.

Now they stood together on the command deck of a SHIELD space station while an army of robots called Parademons amassed for an attack against earth.

And these two women were to team up and stop it.

The catalyst for Kara’s change in attitude was the lucky coincidence that Kara wore an “s” emblem that resembled the one on Superman’s chest.

Further luck revealed the two as long-lost cousins who had thought each other dead after the destruction of their home world, Krypton.

Superman had assisted SHIELD during the Skrull invasion three years ago, but Marvel hadn’t been in SHIELD circles back then.

Like most of the planet, she knew him through reputation: stories of his selfless actions in the news and from the likes of Iron Man and Nick Fury.

The captain extended a gloved hand to Kara Zor-El. “If the Big Blue Boy Scout vouches for you,” she said, “then you’re solid,” Marvel told Kara.

Zor-El glanced at Superman. He shrugged, “Believe it or not that’s the least annoying nickname they have for me,” he said.

Off Kara’s remaining look of confusion, he added, “When this is over, I’ll give you a crash course on Earth customs, including telling you what a Boy Scout is.”

Marvel smirked at the fish-out-of-water moment.

Kara turned back to Captain Marvel. She shook the woman’s hand. Marvel used her other hand to point at Kara. “But no throwing engine parts at me, okay? Same team this time.”

“Agreed,” Kara said, allowing herself a grim smile.

“I’m glad you all can get over your differences,” Hill cut in. “But may I remind you that an invasion force continues to grow around the moon.”

Marvel and the two Kryptonians gave Assistant Director Hill their full attention. Hill led the trio over to a large display monitor centrally located in the command center. Commander Brand followed the group apace.

“We’re registering at least a thousand of those Parademons in orbit around the moon,” Hill said. “Ten minutes ago, that tube they were coming through disappeared. What forces are there just sit as if waiting for a signal.”

“From me,” Kara said. “I haven’t reported back to Apokolips. Darkseid sent the Parademons as a backup.”

“And if you don’t respond to them?” Marvel asked.

“They’ll attack anything and everything in front of them,” Kara replied.

“Do we have to worry about reinforcements from Apokolips?” Hill asked.

“If things go poorly for the Parademons,” Kara began, “They will retreat to Apokolips and report their failure.”

“And your defection,” Brand added.

Kara nodded and continued. “We can stop that.”

“How?” Hill asked.

“The Mother Box.”

Captain Marvel, Brand and Hill exchanged questioning glances.

“That wouldn’t be a box about yeah big, looks like a big circuit board or something, would it?” Marvel asked.

“That’s exactly what it is,” Kara replied.

“So is it safe, say, being on the station?” Marvel asked though her tone hinted that she might not want the answer.

Kara frowned. “I guess you found the one I left on the moon,” she said.

“Yes,” Hill said.

“Can we use it to send the Parademons back?” Marvel asked.

“I don’t think that’d be a good idea,” Superman said. “It’d be the same as if they returned themselves and warned Darkseid. That would endanger our people back on Apokolips.”

Marvel nodded. “Point taken.”

“Besides,” Kara began. “The Parademons will have their own box.”

“How many of these Mother Boxes are there?” Brand asked.

“Five,” Kara replied. “Darkseid’s three heralds each have one. Two more are on reserve for sending invasion forces across space and time.”

“Sounds like the play is destroying the Parademons’ box, then destroying them,” Marvel said. “Hopefully their not returning will buy us some time to take the fight to this Darkseid asshole of yours.”

“That is precisely the plan,” Hill said. “At least, that’s what General Fury is working on.”

“Then let’s get to it,” Captain Marvel said while grinding her gloved fist in the palm of the other hand.
