Superman, Captain Marvel and Kara Zor-El

In Mark Wooden’s latest fanfiction, Captain Marvel (a.k.a. Carol Danvers) encounters an alien teenager demanding the Earth prepare for conquest at her leader Darkseid’s hand. Their first encounter doesn’t go well.

Carol Danvers’s jaw dropped open. “What the hell?”

SHIELD Deputy Director Maria Hill closed the channel to the external audio system. “Calm down, captain,” she said. “It’s a ruse. We get her to follow us back where we’ll have a team ready to capture her should it come to that.”

Danvers took let this register. She looked out the viewport at the girl, who looked pissed. She started talking.

“Begley,” Danvers said, an air of suspicion in her voice. “What’s she saying now?”

A brief silence.

Before Begley could answer, Danvers saw the girl’s eyes start glowing red with energy.

“Get us the hell outta here, Schroeder!” Danvers yelled.

The warning came too late.

Beams of red energy fired from the girl’s eyes and pierced the front viewport. Danvers pulled Hill back. The beam missed them both. Schroeder wasn’t as lucky.

Worse, the damage destroyed the integrity of the cockpit. Oxygen and other debris were immediately sucked out the broken glass.

Danvers again thanked Hill’s preparations, having them all suited up. The lack of oxygen wouldn’t hurt them.

The lack of control of the ship might.

“What the hell’s going on up there?” Fury yelled over the com.

“Think we pissed her off,” Danvers replied.

“She heard you!” Begley said. “She heard you in the ship without the externals!”

“We’ll deal with that later!” Hill said. “Agent Dee! Get out of here! Captain Danvers!”

Danvers pressed Hill toward the back of the shuttle. “I know! Mama’s gotta go to work!” she said. Danvers then thrust herself toward the front viewport, flying through and shattering what remained of it.

In the next moment, she hovered in space a short distance from the girl calling herself Kara Zor-El.

“I hope you can read lips,” Danvers began, “so you know I’m telling you I’m gonna kick —”

In a blink, Kara simply wasn’t there.

In the next second, Danvers felt Kara grab her from behind, spin her and throw her. Before Danvers could arrest her momentum with her flight powers, she smashed against the moon’s surface. She was miles away from Kara.

More importantly, she was miles away from her fellow SHIELD agents.

Back inside the shuttle, Hill pressed Agent Dee into the hallway outside the cockpit. She then slammed her fist against the button that sealed the cockpit off from the rest of the ship.

The two SHIELD agents headed for the secondary command center in a section further back on the shuttle.

Hill barked commands to the agents there. They routed ship controls to their area and began evasive maneuvers.

The agents also brought their weapons to bear against Kara Zor-El.

Before Hill and Dee reached their destination, the shuttle abruptly lurched to one side. Hill called for a status report. An agent responded that they’d just lost one of the three main engines at the rear of the ship.

By the time Hill made it to secondary command, they’d lost another engine.

“Danvers!” Hill said over her comm. She maintained the level of cool that had earned her place at General Fury’s side as deputy director. “Where the hell are you?”

Checking a video monitor for an external view, Hill saw Kara tearing the last of the engines from the rear of the shuttle.

“Why doesn’t she just destroy us?” the piloting agent asked.

“Pray she doesn’t figure that out,” Hill replied. “Danvers?”

“Coming, coming!” Danvers replied over the comm.

General Fury’s voice broke in. “Hold the fort, Captain Danvers. Support is on the way.”
