Sonya lashed out at Scorpion with a front kick. He parried the blow with the brace on his gauntlet. Undeterred, Black Canary followed up with a low kick.
Scorpion blocked her with his shin guard and then extended his leg to kick at Canary. She shifted right and avoided the blow.
The women pressed their attack. Black Canary scored a few hits, forcing Scorpion back. Sonya took advantage of his retreat, but Scorpion parried her attacks. He pushed her away from him.
Scorpion then waved his arms in a martial arts kata. Sonya’s eyes widened as she recognized the move.
Black Canary moved past her to attack Scorpion. Sonya grabbed her back.
“What the hell?” Canary asked.
Suddenly, a blast of flame rose up from Scorpion’s feet. Black Canary and Sonya threw up their hands against the flame’s heat.
When they looked back, Scorpion was gone.
“How the hell?” Canary asked.
Sonya shook her head. “Wish I knew, but I’d seen that trick before. Now we just have to —”
“There!” Black Canary said, pointing further in the building. Sonya looked in that direction. There was a burst of flame on top of one of the other rail cars.
Scorpion emerged from the fire. He glared at the women and then dropped out of sight on the other side of the car.
Sonya took a quick glance back at where O-Ren had disappeared in the smoke. “O-Ren’s gone,” she said. “So’s Batgirl.”
Black Canary put a reassuring hand on Sonya’s shoulder.
“I studied with one of the greatest martial arts masters on the planet,” Canary said, referring to Lady Shiva. “I saw Batgirl take down some street thugs. Wouldn’t want to be O-Ren right now.”
“You haven’t seen O-Ren wiled a blade,” Sonya said, a hint of despair in her voice.
Batgirl looked to the ceiling of the maintenance building. It had a rafter design. Lots of things to wrap a grappling hook around.
She pulled her grappling gun and fired the hook at the ceiling. With the line secure, the vigilante pulled herself up to see over the rail cars and repair machinery.
Batgirl spotted the Asian woman moving between the cars stationed for repairs and toward the building’s rear entrance.
Along the way, the woman shed the white kimono. Underneath, she wore a skintight black suit perfect for stealth. The woman kept the ninja-to at her side.
Batgirl completed the arc of her swing toward the woman. She released the line and landed atop the car nearest the escaping criminal.
A leap to another car brought her within striking distance. A final leap brought her down in front of the woman.
“Looking for a bit of alone time?” Batgirl asked.
The woman stopped, sizing up Batgirl. “This doesn’t involve you, girl,” she said.
“When you brought Kano and his violence to my city, you involved me. Now tell me why you’re here.”
The Asian woman tilted her head slightly. Then Batgirl saw a flash of steel. The ninja-to blade sliced across her cowl.
It failed to draw blood but served as a warning of the woman’s skill.
“As you are not familiar with me, I give you this warning,” the woman said. “My name is O-Ren Ishii. At the age of eleven, I avenged the death of my parents by murdering yakuza oyabun Matsumoto.
“Since that time, I have honed my skills as an assassin, slaying many little girls like you.”
“What did you do? Talk them to death?”
O-Ren Ishii smiled. She moved into a fighting stance.
Batgirl did the same.
Black Canary and Sonya split up to go around the rail car he had ducked behind. The intent was to box in the teleporting criminal.
Unfortunately, Scorpion found Canary first.
She caught him out of the corner of her eye, his spear coming at her back. Canary spun out of the way.
Using the force of her spin, she brought her heel up and cracked Scorpion on the back of his head.
The masked assassin stumbled forward, crashing into a piece of repair machinery.
“Teach you to sneak up on people,” Black Canary said.
She followed up her taunt with another kick to the assassin’s face. Scorpion rolled against the machinery, stumbling away from Canary.
He managed to keep his footing.
Along the way, he grabbed a metal shaft from the machinery. He hurled it at Canary. She quickly stepped to one side and avoided the object.
“A wise woman in a bat suit said it’s best to restrain your enemies,” Canary said. She tilted her neck to either side, cracking the bones there. “Or, we can go with an old-fashioned Seattle beat down.”
Scorpion gazed at Black Canary. He then began another martial arts kata, similar to the one he’d used earlier to teleport. However, this one was just different enough —
Canary felt an intense heat beneath her feet.
It looks like things are heating up for Black Canary! Will Sonya get to her friend in time to help her? And now a showdown between Batgirl and O-Ren Ishii? Whaaaaaat? Come back next week to see how this wraps up!
