About an hour after their call with Fury, Batgirl had contacted Batman. She’d beaten the encryption on the USB drive. Stark figured she would, seeing as how she’d broken his encryption on a closed network.

Batgirl figured out the clone’s middleman was responsible for shipments coming into Gotham, and one outgoing shipment.

There was a bunch of bouncing around, but she narrowed the point of origin and return as Samara, Russia.

True to his word, Fury had a quinjet ready. Stark decided to let Fury burn up his gas for a change and took the quinjet with Coulson. Batman insisted on using his transportation but would coordinate arrival with Stark.

The quinjet landed at a SHIELD-friendly private facility near Samara. Stark heard almost immediately from Batman, who’d landed an hour earlier.

While en route, Batman had researched more of the data from the USB. He’d narrowed the shipments’ point of origin to a warehouse on the outskirts of town near the rail yards. He’d meet them there.

Coulson drove Stark to an area a few blocks of the location and parked. The buildings in the area were the old school Gothic kind, with plenty of arches and gargoyles.

While Stark suited up in his third identical Iron Man armor, he asked, “So you’ve been ordered to observe, but hang back?”

“Yes,” Coulson replied. “But the general is a cautious fellow.”

Stark smiled. “Good to know a cavalry is standing by. Now if we just had our resident bat.”

“I’ve been watching you since you arrived.”

Stark and Coulson looked up at the sound of the voice. One of the gargoyles moved, then dropped to the ground with a flutter of a cape.

“Seriously,” Stark began. “You do know how to make a hell of an entrance, Batman.”

The Dark Knight approached Coulson and Stark.

“Turn your commlink to frequency 539.97500,” Batman said.

“You get that, Friday?” Stark said. He then slid on his helmet.

“This way we don’t hack your system again,” Batman said over Iron Man’s comm.

“And thanks for that,” Iron Man replied. Using his external speaker so Coulson could hear, he asked, “What’s the plan?”

Batman pulled a small device from his utility belt. Pressing a button, it emitted a green laser. Batman aimed it at the ground.

The laser displayed images of the warehouse in question, revealing guards with energy gauntlets in various locations.

“Six guards watch the grounds,” Batman said. “Probably more inside. Looking at the building’s schematics, I found a few points of entry and the probable location of a robot. The data chip should be near it.”

“Smash and grab, then?” Iron Man asked.

“More distract and grab. You create a diversion out here,” Batman said, referring to the main entrance. “Distract the guards and anyone inside. I’ll recover the data chip.”

“Sure we can’t just plow our way in and destroy the robot?”

Coulson answered. “Should you find Vanko, KGBeast, and the others, SHIELD will want to mop up. Unfortunately, we can’t run a military op without Russia’s express permission.”

“Hence securing the chip first,” Batman said.

Iron Man shook his head. “So Fury sends us in, knowing we don’t have any authorization to do this. And should Russia get upset?”

“They’d get upset at the two of you,” Coulson said, “who have no allegiances to any foreign power, and were merely acting on your own accord as citizens of the world.”

“Breaking just a few dozen international laws in the process,” Iron Man said.

He turned to Batman. “This how you run things with Gordon back in Gotham? Everything’s cool until you get caught breaking the law, then he disowns you?”

Batman turned from Iron Man and Coulson. “I don’t get caught.”

“But you do break a few laws, along with arms, legs, civil statutes, and glass!”

Ignoring Iron Man, Batman said, “I’ll contact you when I’m in position.”
